Desert safaris

Main destination: Nxai Pan National Park

Accommodation: Budget camping Inside Nxai Pan NP

Meals & drinks: All meals included all

Day 1-3:

Nxai Pan National Park We will have early morning game drives and sit at the waterhole

We collect you from your Lodge at 9am, and drive 136km on the tar road before turning off and driving 32km to Nxai Pan, on a very sandy road.Part of the great Makgadikgadi complex, Nxai Pan National Park covers an area of 2,100 km2, and comprises several larger pans which were once ancient salt lakes. These larger pans are now grassed, and are scattered with islands of acacia trees, and smaller pans that fill with water during the rainy season - thus providing rich resources for wildlife.

We have 3 nights here, in an exclusive BOGA (Botswana Guides Association) site, away from other people.
We will try and have you out there at 5.30am to look for Brown Hyena and see what else is around. Later in the day we will sit at the Waterhole, the only one for miles around and very busy, if the rains haven't started. Sunsets at the Waterhole can be spectacular, with animals silhouetted against the setting sun. We return to our camp after sunset, and enjoy great food and drinks around a fire

Day 4-6:

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

We drive 4 hours from Nxai Pan to Khumaga in Makgadikgadi Pans National Park an area of 3,900square km, where we spend 3 nights in the Public Campsite, across the river from the village of Khumaga but separated by the Boteti River. Hundreds of Zebra congregate here to drink and provide great photographic opportunities. There are numerous birds of prey in this area, vultures, owls and eagles galore. We will concentrate on game drives along the river which should be flowing still although it has a history of drying up. Hippos and Crocodiles occur here, and survived 17 years when the river was dry, until early 2009. White Rhino were released here several years ago, but are seldom seen.

Day 7-9:

 Central Kalahari Game Reserve

We leave Khumaga and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park early morning catching the Ferry across the Boteti River, driving across the river if it is dry or driving around the long way - time will tell.
We drive to the village of Rakops where we stop for diesel and ice. We then drive to Matswiri Entrance Gate to the CKGR where we fill our water and have lunch.
In less than 2 hours we arrive at our exclusive camp site at Deception Valley.
If the rains haven't started yet the conditions will be incredibly harsh, and you will be amazed at the resilience of the animals there - Gemsbok and Springbok in large numbers with many other grazers and browsers and predators. Hopefully the rains will be falling and you will witness the rebirth of the land. This reserve covers an area larger than 54,000 square km's, we will explore a part of it from Letiahau in the West, where they pump water, to Sunday Pan. The night skies will be amazing.
